C Public sector The public sector is a major provider of sport and recreation facilities and services within the I-J. These facilities include urban parks, playgrounds, libraries, picnic areas, nature trails, beeches and country parks. Local government also provides facilities such as swimming pools, playing fields, golf rouses, sports centers, athletic tracks, art centers and museums where there is a direct charge to the user. However, it should be understood that these charges are usually highly subsidized. The public sector is really important to the sports sector as a whole as it is usually the enabler between all the sectors, especially when a partnership is developed. Below is a list of facilities and provision that would be lost if the public sector ceased funding sport and recreation within the UK: There would be no urban recreational land (playing fields, football pitches, cricket pitches etc. As they would be sold for more profitable ventures like supermarkets and housing Swimming pools would be closed as these are not commercially viable. The voluntary and public sectors do not seek to make a profit; they are established, built and run for other reasons. The private sector does not have any real interest in providing sport and leisure provision; it is only really interested in making that all important profit. It is trying to exploit peoples Willingness to pay for sport and recreation provision, by providing facilities that the voluntary and public sectors cannot afford to deliver. This usually means that private sector provision is provided for people at the higher end of financial earnings. This type of provision usually involves some kind of liaison between the local government, local voluntary organizations and the local education authority. UK Considerations to take into account Location When deciding on where to do their work-based experience, learners need to take into account the location of a potential work-based experience. When deciding how far to travel they will have to consider the following:- Do you want to stay at home? This may limit your opportunities, but will be cheaper Moving away from home may increase your opportunities, but will also cost more money If you have to move do you have any friends or relatives you could stay with to keep the costs down? Do you have a car? If not what is the public transport like to get to the placement? The final decision will probably be based on what you want to achieve from the placement and how long you are willing to spend within the placement. Cost will be a factor, but look at the whole picture (benefits/weaknesses of the placement) before deciding. Hours It is important that learners are aware that the vast majority of people who work in the sport and recreation industry, work unsocial hours. The main reason for this is that the learner will have to work when other people are free, which is usually first hint in the morning, last thing at night and at the weekends. Learners should also be aware they maybe asked to work a Rota-system which will have an impact on their social life. It will also mean that they will have to plan their studies around their work commitments. Regulations Even though learners are only on their work placement for a limited amount of time, they are still protected by employment law. Nearly every part of the Job they undertake during the work-based experience will have rules and regulations that the learner must follow. The learner should expect from their employer: Some kind of contract/Job description that explains what is expected of them, and what is entitled to them The learner should be given some idea of working hours If there is a problem during the placement, the learner should inform their tutor immediately The learners should be aware that because they are under 18, they have additional regulations that they have to follow due to their age. These include: If the learner is over 18 they only have to work a maximum of a 48-hour working week. If the learner is under 18, still at school and working there are some legal restrictions on their hours. They are not allowed to: -Work before am or after pm Work for more than two hours on a school day or for more than one hour before school Work for more than eight hours on Saturdays or holidays, or two hours on Sundays Work for more than 35 hours a week during the holidays Also the employer is bound by Equal Opportunity legislation. Again if the learner feels that the employer is acting in an inappropriate manner, he/she should inform his/her tutor immediately. It doesnt matter what your sex, race, religion, sexual orientation or disability is, the employer should always treat you equally and with aspect. Some of the facts of the legislation include: All employers have to operate an equal opportunities policy its the law. Equal opportunities start with recruitment and cover the treatment of all employees Everyone has the same rights, regardless of gender, ethnic and religious background, sexuality and disability Health and safety There are two parts to the health and safety process that learners need to be aware of. Firstly the College has a duty to the learner and should ensure that he/she is not in a work-based experience that may expose him/her to health and safety risks. The second part of the health and safety process lies with employers. They are bound under health and safety law to conduct a risk assessment of the learner within the new work place. They will have to look at the work the learner will be undertaking, and weigh up whether they have enough safety precautions in place, or they should do more to prevent harm. The employer will need to take into account the following: The placement provider must comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act The employer needs to take into account that the learner is likely to be inexperienced, unaware of health and safety risks and physically or mentally immature Put in place measures to control the risks which will reduce them entirely, or reduce them to the lowest possible level. The employer needs to keep a record of the risk assessment and record the control measures put in place The placement provider must comply with any restrictions or prohibitions on work for young people One of the learners key responsibilities during their placement is their duties under health and safety. The learners duties include: To take reasonable care of their own health and safety To take reasonable care not to put other people fellow employees and members of the public at risk by what they do or dont do in the course of their work To co- operate with their employer, making sure they get proper training Not to interfere with or misuse anything thats been provided for their health, safety or welfare To report any injuries, strains or illnesses they suffer as a result of doing their Job To tell their employer if something happens that might affect their ability to work Roles and responsibilities The roles and responsibilities of the learners work based experience, as outlined on heir Job description, will set out their key tasks and services they will have to perform whilst they are undertaking the work based experience.

When It Was Legal to Mail a Baby Once-upon-a-time, it was legal to mail a baby in the United States. It happened more than once and by all accounts, the mailed tots arrived no worse for wear. Yes, baby mail was a real thing. On January 1, 1913, the then Cabinet-level U.S. Post Office Department - now the U.S. Postal Service  - first started delivering packages. Americans instantly fell in love with the new service and were soon mailing each other all sorts of items, like parasols, pitchforks and, yes, babies. Smithsonian Confirms Birth of Baby Mail As documented in the article, â€Å"Very Special Deliveries,† by curator of the Smithsonian’s National Postal Museum Nancy Pope, several children, including one â€Å"14-pound baby† were stamped, mailed and dutifully delivered by the U.S. Post Office between 1914 and 1915. The practice, noted Pope, became affectionately known by letter carriers of the day as baby mail. According to Pope, with  postal regulations, being few and far between in 1913, they failed to specify exactly â€Å"what† could and could not be mailed via the still very new parcel post service. So in mid-January 1913, an unnamed baby boy in Batavia, Ohio was delivered by a Rural Free Delivery carrier to its grandmother about a mile away. â€Å"The boy’s parents paid 15-cents for the stamps and even insured their son for $50,† wrote Pope. Despite a â€Å"no humans† declaration by the Postmaster General, at least five more children were officially mailed and delivered between 1914 and 1915. Baby Mail Often Got Very Special Handling If the very idea of mailing babies sounds sort of reckless to you,  don’t worry. Long before the then-Post Office Department had created its â€Å"special handling† guidelines for packages, children delivered via â€Å"baby-mail† got it anyway. According to Pope, the children were â€Å"mailed† by traveling with trusted postal workers, often designated by the child’s parents. And fortunately, there are no heartbreaking cases of babies being lost in transit or stamped â€Å"Return to Sender† on record. The longest trip taken by a â€Å"mailed† child took place in 1915  when a six-year-old girl traveled from her mother’s home in Pensacola, Florida, to her father’s home in Christiansburg, Virginia. According to Pope, the nearly 50-pound little girl made the 721-mile trip on a mail train for just 15 cents in parcel post stamps. According to the Smithsonian, its â€Å"baby mail† episode pointed out Postal Service’s importance at a time when traveling long distances was becoming more important  but remained difficult and largely unaffordable for many Americans. Perhaps even more importantly, noted Ms. Pope, the practice indicated how the Postal Service in general, and especially its letter carriers had become â€Å"a touchstone with family and friends far away from each other, a bearer of important news and goods. In some ways, Americans trusted their postmen with their lives.† Certainly, mailing your baby took a lot of​ plain old  trust. The End of Baby Mail The Post Office Department officially put a stop to â€Å"baby mail† in 1915, after postal regulations barring the mailing of human beings enacted the year before were finally enforced. Even today, postal regulations allow the  mailing of live animals, including poultry, reptiles, and bees, under certain conditions. But no more babies, please. About the Photographs As you can imagine, the practice of â€Å"mailing† children, usually at costs far lower than regular train fare, drew considerable notoriety, leading to the taking of the two photographs shown here. Kennedy made his renowned speech saying that he will assign the USA with lots of recourses of landing a man on the moon before the decade was over .which was never done before and although impossible at the time the project was so fascinating that everyone was talking about it out and everyone was waiting for the moment that rocket will take off from earth to the unknown planet, the moon. Eight years later Apollo 11 took off to the moon carrying three people and came back safely .so.neil Armstrong and his crew won the race against Russia .a lot of very persuasive evidence has been discovered and the people have doubted that America did send a man to the moon, and that was when the Apollo hoax was born. Wide Spread Conspiracy In this hoax picture that contractors, NASA tells everyone about the moon landing conspiracy and pays them for their services that their not giving. Nasa makes an announcement to the public telling them that their making rocket parts. Then at the primary day of work they tell everybody in the factory that they are not really making rocket parts and that if they cooperate they will be set for life. Employees that do not comply are threatened from NASA officials. The advantage to this is type of conspiracy that no real equipment has to be made, except for a rocket to go up and a Lander to come down. If we sent six spacecrafts to the moon in ten years, then why in thirty years with so many technological advances why didnt they go back to the moon not even once? NASA argues that there was a funds cut .for the first ten years this can be explained after the Apollo missions, because of the buildup of nuclear weapons would have cost money that could have been taken away from NASA. But what happened during the other twenty years? Some groups say that the risks were too high to validate another moon landing, but the risk was there the first time and it will always be there. A chance is that the technology available is still not enough for mankind to go to the moon, because we didnt go to the moon in the first place. Photographic Evidence Moon landing photographs are the main argument for the Apollo conspiracy believers, as there are hundreds of moon photographs that have mistakes on them, for example different shadow directions. Because of these mistakes the photos are believed fake by the conspiracy followers. Those people explain why create fake photos of something that really happened? One of the most constant arguments is that the moon landing photos and videos are faked is simply that there are no stars in the sky which is impossible. Although scientists explain this phenomenon, arguing that the cameras used by the Apollo mission had manual light filters, which is similar to a persons eye pupil, The Sun reflects off of the moons surface and the white suits of the astronauts. Making both remarkably bright, unlike the stars which are very far and so very dim .The cameras on the Apollo mission are put on a bright setting, so the moon and the astronauts are visible but the stars are not visible because of the flood of light from both the moon and astronauts even though there is an explanation for no stars, there are many other photos that look like they have multiple light sources shining on the surroundings, casting shadows in different directions even though the sun is the only light source available on the moon , which the same scientists failed to explain .The conspiracy believers quarrel that the only possible way several light sources could be shining on the ‘set, is if these photos and videos were taken i n a movie studio in Hollywood. One of the biggest anomalies that appear on the Moon shots are the way in which shadows seem to be cast in totally different directions, even though the objects making the shadows are a mere few feet apart. An exampleof this is in one of the pictures where the shadow of the Lander is pointing east while the rocks which are a few meters away are pointing south-east. The conspirasitsts say that in order for this to happen they had to use more then one light source a trick producers use tohighlight certain areas while shooting a movie . Another picture shows two astronauts with one of the astronauts shadows bent .scientists say that angled shadows come from one long artificial light work this explanation could work, as movie lights do cause this effect. Although this has to do with ones own opinion but the conspiracy theorists explanation could work. Another example is the picture of Earth taken from the Apollo 11 when it was 130,000 miles away. This was the very first view ever taken of Earth on the mission and in the picture the window frame appears on the left of the shot which seems very strange as one would want to come as close as he can so one can get the best shot and also to eliminate any light reflections .but Buzz Aldrin, one of the astronauts on the mission and the one who took the shot , took it when he was standing far away from the window also the camera is not put to infinity to get the closest shot possible. Furthermore According to nasa ,crosshairs were built inside the cameras that would help the astronauts calculate distances on the moon .having said that those crosshairs should be present on all the footage Furthermore on all Apollo footage there should be cross hairs present on the film Incidentally, Jan Lundberg, executive vice president and head of discovery research at Astra Zeneca has stated that the only way that one could calculate the distance in the shot using the crosshairs would be if one had two cameras set up to take a stereo picture. Moreover all of the crosshairs have disappeared from the film. This is impossible unless the film has been tampered with. Other than that all the crosshairs should be not hidden behind any item and should be completely observable in all shots. The only explanation is that NASA has either erased out certain objects in the film or added the objects over the crosshairs. Scientific evidence As a matter of fact the great variation in temperature that the films would have had to go through during the Apollo mission ranges between-180F degrees in the shade to an incredible -200F degree. As seen in some shots the astronauts move between the shadows of the rocks then into full sunlight definitely the film would have corroded under such circumstances. If the films used on that mission had such characteristics why isnt Kodak selling them today in the markets? Some of the lighting on the footage is very doubtful. One of the pictures shows the astronaut in complete shadow because the sun is behind him, although the whole astronaut is caught in vivid light The video cameras used on the mission were specially fitted with night lenses to enhance the lack of light because the reflectivity of light is very low on the moon that light does not reflect onto the rocks on the ground. Having said that how can still camera take photos so bright and clear that one can see all the details on aldrins suit and on the lunar Lander. This is only possible if the artificial lighting is used or it has been added to the photos, although NASA confirmed that absolutely no artificial light was used .how is it possible to have no artificial light and yet the pictures are so bright that even aldrins boot protector is lit up. Dr. David groves that works for quantech image processing has studied these shots and using the focal length of the camera and he was able to get hold of the boot aldrin was wearing and using these tools he was able to find the exact point at which the artificial light was used. Next comes the picture that shows neil Armstrong at landing site in the reflector of his visor. The stange thing about this photo is that the crosshair that is supposed to be in the middle appears at the bottom near aldrins right leg. How is that possible if the cameras where attached to the chest of the cameraman? A fact that is provable due to the reflection of the camera man in the visor. All this evidence suggests that man did not go to the moon and that all the films and pictures are fake because man would have to stay near the earths magnetic field for safety. But why would NASA fake and the US fake the moon landing? NASA Motives There are many theories concerning the motives of the USA government to the stage the moon landing .some of these are war prestige, monetary gain and they also used it as a distraction. Write a critical commentary on John Updike's â€Å"A & P† John Updike’s â€Å"A is written during the early 1960’s in America. The short story is written in a first person narrative of Sammy, who is a young employee at a store. The tone of the story is direct and sounds as if one were partaking in a conversation with Sammy himself. The story, thus, is more personal. The reader follows Sammy’s train of thought as he makes observations of events that happen that lead up to climax of him quitting his job. Sammy can be seen as one who does not stand out, he is lost amongst the masses.He has an ordinary job, with ordinary co-workers at an ordinary store. This is how the middleclass, or working-class, is seen, especially during that time. When Sammy first sees the three girls that walk into the store with their bathing costumes on in the bread aisle, the reader notices how carefully Sammy watches them. He begins his descriptions of the first two girls and dismi sses them for the lack of attraction. He then focuses, and seems to be transfixed, on the third girl whom he deems the leader and names her â€Å"Queenie†. One immediately notices that Sammy finds a certain freedom in her beauty.The fact that she is barefoot and barely clothed defies the normal code of attire in a shop and so creates a freedom. One could say that he is interested in her for the fact that she does stand out, that she is not seen as ordinary, unlike him. In a sense, Sammy has a rather immature view of the world. When he hears that â€Å"Queenie† has been sent to the shop simply to buy a jar of herring snacks for her mother, Sammy immediately pictures a party of rich and sophisticated people. His idea of social statuses and class distinctions, could be said, are misguided.He has the idea that money can lead to freedom, and so climbing the social ladder helps gain that goal. When Lengel (the manager) approaches the girls and reproaches â€Å"Queenie† for her lack of clothing Sammy immediately feels the need to rise to the title of a hero. It is as though he now sees â€Å"Queenie†, the leader, change into a damsel in distress, and feels the need to save her from the words of Lengel. It is almost as though by ‘saving’ â€Å"Queenie† he will have a chance at climbing the social ladder that will lead to his success and freedom.One could also say that Sammy is reaching for individuality, to not simply be an ordinary employee, but be able to become someone that stands out as easily as â€Å"Queenie†. Sammy grasps at the romantic idea of a hero and quits his job, yearning to join the girls. However, the girls walk out the store and Sammy is left to talk to Lengel who states that Sammy wouldn’t want to do this to his mom and dad. Sammy is determined to quit. He realises that quitting is a gesture made that has to be followed through.As he stands outside the store, the romantic hero has died wi thin him. The girls are gone and he realises the situation he has put himself in and the financial straits he has put his parents in. Updike has given the reader a glance into a situation that changed Sammy’s life for good. It emphasises how choices can change a person’s life and how at that stage can seem insignificant. PPD My nerves have calmed a lot since settling into LCF. Coming from a small village with a textiles class of just me, I worried I would lack the knowledge for such a renowned course. This itself has been motivational for me wanting to succeed, to prove to my teachers that I can do well, as my school was very academically orientated, meaning, being a creative student was often frowned upon, teachers thought me less smart, or I needn’t work as hard, something I have always been determined to prove wrong. To help settle in, I went to welcome events held at university and in my halls to make new like-minded friends. Student welfare mentors and social reps were a huge help in settling in as they were very welcoming and helpful. I spoke to them one to one and gained helpful advice for the course. This really helped me as I now have a good support network around me and feel settled within the university, meaning I am producing better work, as I am comfortable where I am. I feel a strength is my pattern cutting ability and 3D work, though I am excited to improve this technically as everything I know is self-taught, so I am enjoying learning more technical methods. I have always loved being able to start from scratch and finish with the end product. Through speaking with my 3D tutor, he has helped me to improve and learn new skills such as the slash and spread method to manipulate darts into my work.
